Women at the Wheel 2022: Edvie Castro

2022 Honoree

General Counsel & COO
DOWC

What is one of your proudest accomplishments of your career?

I take tremendous pride in the role I play as an agent for change in a rapidly growing company. Through creative thinking, flexibility and resiliency, we are able to consistently push the envelope while ensuring that the organization is still operating at peak efficiency. In recent years, I have guided DOWC in the establishment of a national and international practice, the expansion of our technology development company, the chartering of multiple insurance companies and the formation of our insurance management division. I am proud of our ability to balance control and efficiency as we evolve.

In what do you credit your success and/or what do you think makes you stand apart from your peers?

As the leader tasked with “getting everything done,” I credit much of my success to my ability to develop relationships, provide mentorship and align the strengths of each team member with the overall strategy of the organization. I take complete ownership over my responsibilities, which include the development of my team and ensuring they have all of the tools and resources they need to be successful. It is only through their hard work that we are able to fully execute our goals.

What tools do you use to help you grow in the industry?

Simply stated, growth is the result of increased knowledge and experience. I have learned that not all knowledge capital can be found in a book. The best lessons come from personal experience, especially when it comes to business. The next best result from your ability to listen to, understand and learn from someone else’s experience. As a result, the greatest tool available to you is your network — the many women in the industry who are willing to mentor you and share their challenges and successes in order to accelerate your development.

What is your best advice to other women who want to excel in the automotive industry?

Always be confident in your skills and knowledge and, just as importantly, your ability to drive positive change. These things are often easier to do when you surround yourself with business partners, female and male, who endorse your abilities, encourage your contribution and champion your mutual vision.
