CarLotz has recently partnered with Privacy4Cars, a tech company focused on creating privacy and compliance solutions for vehicles, to offer Personal Information (PI) deletion across CarLotz’ consigned inventory and maintain its position at the leading edge of the retail remarketing channel.
All it takes for large amounts of PI to be captured by a vehicle is for a user to connect a phone via Bluetooth, plug it in the USB, or — if the vehicle is equipped with GPS or telematics — simply drive. While there are urban legends around how to delete PI stored in the infotainment system and other modules of the vehicle, including phone records, detailed whereabouts, garage door codes, text messages (often including financial and medical information), biometrics, driver behavior tracking, unique identifiers and more abound, the truth is that there are tens of thousands of different vehicle-specific procedures. This is why even large, sophisticated dealerships who claim to have both a specific policy requiring to delete the PI from vehicles and to have specific processes in place to do so, were found out of compliance by customers who test drove one or two cars 75% of the time.
CarLotz is setting a new standard and is determined that no lender should accept a process that is not measurable, repeatable, nor provides detailed compliance records.
Through this partnership, CarLotz is offering best-in-class protections to those remarketers who want to take advantage of the improved economics of a retail model without compromising to the outdated standards held by most other dealerships. CarLotz offers the ability to delete PI from all cars on its lots, and proactively produces detailed certificates of deletion to help prove each company has “reasonable security” measures in place. This partnership allows for CarLotz to offer all players in the vehicle leasing space the same access to the best technology and an unparalleled level of assurance.
